Thank you, Tiziana, for putting ever so much time, love and dedication into this work, and to my daughters Sophia and Johanna for our beautiful music hours, to my wife Sabine, to my friends Stobby and Joelle for hosting me at Erik Satie’s studio in Paris, and to all at Studios de Meudon. I dedicate this album to the movie directors who made it all possible — above all, to Horst. Thank you all for your confidence and loyalty. Hans

Infinite thanks to Hans for laying his music confidently in my hands, to my children Ulysse and Ender, to my husband Stéphane, and to J.S. Bach for teaching me every day to stay humble towards the music. Tiziana

TIZIANA DE CAROLIS

Italian by birth, French by adoption, now living in Texas, Tiziana chose to express herself through the universal language of music very early in her life.

She graduated in piano with full honors from the National Conservatory of Music N. Piccinni” in Bari (Italy) and has won numerous national and international piano contests.

At age 25 she moved to Paris to continue her studies in composition and chamber music. After two years she earned the Higher Diploma in Music Composition for film and chamber music at the Ecole Normale “Alfred Cortot”.

In 2002 she was unanimously chosen for the First Prize for Composition at the “Académies de Lutèce” in Paris.

In 2005 Tiziana created a class for film-music composition at the Conservatory Maurice Ravel” of Levallois (Paris region) and a series of lectures inviting the most renowned composers of film music of our time (Bruno Coulais, Philippe Rombi, Carlo Crivelli, ...).

Administrator of UCMF (Union of French Film-Music Composers), she is also an active performer and composer for film, theater and concert music.

At the 2008 jubilee “100 Years of Film Music”, the community of Levallois commissioned Tiziana to create a multimedia opus entitled THE FOUR ELEMENTS for choir, orchestra and spherical screen, in collaboration with producer Alexandre Dubosc.

Tiziana de Carolis is strongly interested in the blending of the arts. Currently she is creating “Four Seasons of the Heart” for violin, cello, piano and painted canvases with the Neapolitan artist Igina Izzo.

Movie(s)Emotions
A Making Of

Tiziana De Carolis and I met at the Cannes Film Festival, South of France, in 2006. It was one of those rare moments when you meet a person for the first time, and right away she feels like a friend you have known for years. We both wanted to work together on a project, not knowing which it would be. In 2010 Tiziana invited me to Paris for a film-music conference at the Maurice Ravel Conservatory, where she was teaching as a professor of film music. Listening to some of her own recordings, I discovered that she was not only an excellent composer, but also a brilliant pianist.

Born and raised in southern Italy, Tiziana has the ability to put a lot of emotion into her playing, but without ever losing her musical precision. I was enthusiastic and asked her to play some of my film scores on the piano for the recording of this album.

It doesn’t always work to take score music out of its context. Pure listening asks for more musical substance and density. It would be too much in the score, but it's missing when you have no picture. When I went through some of my older works and chose the selections for these recordings, it was obvious that some of the orchestral pieces needed transcription, while some others needed additional arrangement for the piano.

In the meantime Tiziana had moved to Houston, Texas. So we did this pre-production work together over the Internet, and she surprised me with many wonderful ideas, ornaments and gorgeous fill-ins, sidelines and the ever so important middle voice. All in all, Tiziana lifted my music up to a higher level, and I'm deeply grateful to her.

We both agreed that Paris would be the perfect place to record this album. So we chose the Studios de Meudon located on the outskirts of Paris, specializing in recording classical and jazz piano. There are two first-class grand pianos, a Steinway D274 and a Fazioli 278, and Bernard Faulon, the owner, is also an excellent piano technician.

Obviously this studio offered the best conditions for our project. Not only Tiziana’s interpretations, but also the piano sound of this album, make it a pleasure to listen to.

Hans
